If you did buy it, drop your thoughts in here.I just have to say that as far as RTSs go, I have a few things to say.The pathing for the units is, well, not good. I don't know how it is for swimming or flying creatures (haven't gotten to those yet), but land based ones seem to have a hard time finding their way around other units. Trying to use area effects for creatures is also a pain, as it is much more difficult than it should be to get them to even go off.I also am finding the difficulty to be rather high. The AI is relentless on the default setting. It took me 5 attempts to get past the 3rd mission. The graphics and the creature combiner are great.
One problem with the combiner, and yes I know this is going to sound stupid, but there is almost too much variety. In order to get through Mission 3 I had to quick screwing around with animal gimmicks and just make a huge army of high melee creatures. The fact that there are only two resources is a good thing, although at this point it seems kind of silly, as the limited resource (coal) seems to always be in short supply. Electricity is so easily obtained, that so far it seems pointless. At this point, I'm glad I only paid $30 for it.
I have been waiting for this game for so long, maybe my expectations just got too high for my own good. And maybe a patch will resolve some of this.Well, anyone else? I've only played the demo (is there an excuse not to?), but I'd have to say I have it pegged as a gimmick game too.My girlfriend loved the creature combiner, but the actual gameplay is incredibly lame. Entertaining for a little while because the whole thing is presented very slickly, but ultimately it's just a derivative of the many good and original RTS games before it and it really fails to have anything interesting other than the creature combiner.
I also felt that the combined creatures were not very useful, and, to use C&C as a comparison, a Hummvee and a Grenadier is still going to be a shitty unit no matter how you combine them. In the same way, a mammoth tank and a stealth tank are obviously going to kick ass combined.
The feeling I got in the demo was that combining low level creatures still left you with crappy units so there was really no need to bother with them. The special abilities for most of the creatures were lame (the lobster's rush stood out as one of the more useful) and you really could only succeed by building creatures from your highest level and hoping you outnumbered your opponent. The specific abilities didn't really give individual creatures any advantage.-Ysalamiri. Besides, after Black and White, Civ 3, Fallout Tactics and various other crapfests, I'm pretty good at spotting a gimmick game.I just wanted to make sure you hadn't actually played the game. I don't even know how you can throw it in the same category as B&W, so I had to ask.Edit: BTW, I'm not trying to be an ass.
I just don't get stating something like you did without ever having played the game. Even playing the DEMO is pushing it from what I hear (I never played it myself, so take that with a grain of salt). This message was edited by jued0001 on January 31, 2003 at 13:25.
